Did You Know THIS is one of the Top 10 Neighborhoods to Live in the US?!

Venus Williams warms up before a special women's exhibition tennis match against Madison Keys at the BB&T Atlanta Open Tournament at Atlantic Station. BRANDEN CAMP/SPECIAL

Did you know that Atlantic Station here in Atlanta, Georgia was listed as a top ten place to live in the US? Are you curious as to why? How?

Although I am a fair housing educator and business coach now, I started as a real estate sales agent in Metro Atlanta just when Atlantic Station was only an architectural doll-size model in a display case. Once Atlantic Station became life-size, showing and selling the then-new homes was a cherished highlight of my day as I began my sales career because it was one of in-town Atlanta‘s first live/work/play areas of the new millennium. ⁣
For example, it was great that during business hours, I could show homes in the highrise, head downstairs to grab lunch, have a midday refresher with yoga on the lawn, stop by one of the boutiques to refresh my makeup and wardrobe, and then after business hours in the summer, attend “Screen on the Green” with both clients and friends without moving my car an inch the whole day. ⁣What a feat in metro Atlanta!
For my homebuying clients, Atlantic Station made living and playing in town accessible with a grocery store, trendy restaurants, posh clothing stores, Cirque du Soleil pop-ups, winter ice skating ring (often with street carts with NY-style delectable and iconic warm, candied nuts), concerts, the Atlanta Open tennis tournament (we met Venus Williams one year!), art exhibits and even star-studded, red-carpet movie premieres at the onsite movie theater. What a time to be alive!⁣
Ultimately, for those of us who hate Atlanta traffic (we’ve literally had a plane crash on a local highway for anyone wondering how bad traffic could be) yet crave and welcome the thrill of a night (and day) on the town, Atlantic Station has been partly a one-stop oasis.

But also partly a dystopian destination because unfortunately, it displaced some of the legacy Westside community. It was disappointing that the Realtor.com article, The Top 10 Best Neighborhoods To Live in America, featured comments ("developer's no-man's land") that disparaged the prior community without any context. I was quoted in this article but the context I gave was unfortunately left out. It's still worth a read, but please know that many previous residents saw that area as home, as a place of pride and dignity that, by design, did not have the resources -- in large part due to unfair lending and housing practices.
