5 Habits of Time-Block Bouncers (aka those who get more done!)
As featured in RealtorMag.
Have you ever noticed that time-blocking (designating time on your schedule to work on a specific task) is not the challenge? Whether you prefer pen and paper or an online system, you can fill your schedule with items galore.
Then why is it so hard to stay consistent with time-blocking?
The answer lies in if you know how to be a bouncer. You read that right. When you think of a bouncer, you likely think of the doorman at popular or celebrity-filled events. Exactly!
The only difference is it will be for your time and not a venue. We all have the same 24 hours in a day but we do not all guard it the same, which either diminishes or enhances our ability to "get'er done".
#5 Be Honest and Offer Alternatives
It happens. Sometimes you have been guarding your time like a pro bouncer but someone somehow slips through your boundaries. All is not lost! Simply be honest AND, this is the key, provide an alternative time to connect. For example:
"Sally, thanks for ______(calling/stopping by/etc.) but this is not a good time. Can we connect ________ (add time option 1) or ________ (add time option 2)?"
And if the interruption comes online (via email, social media, etc.), then use one of these Google calendar integrated tools to give that person a dedicated time that fits her and you: Assistant. To or Calendly
#4 Work Where No One Knows Your Name
To get work done, you do not always want to live out the theme song from the Cheers! TV show. If there is no such thing as non-peak between your family and friends, then relocate yourself for your best productivity. We now live in a world where co-working spots (non- or low commital working stations that offer the creature comforts of meeting rooms, printing, wifi and other office amenities) are becoming as commonplace as grocery stores. Explore sites like DesksNear.Me or Coworker.com to see what's near you and how their ratings. If you do not need all of that, your local library is still a great place to go where the staff (a.k.a. sound bouncers) is happy to shush any of your interruptions.
